CAPE
HILLSBOROUGH
In Mackay, we stocked up for our 3
nights in Cape Hillsborough NP where we are now. Turquoise waters wash the
shore beside our (paid) campsite, and tropical birds of many kinds make it very
hard for us to complete whole sentences without being distracted. The
temperatures are definitely tropical and shade is a much-sought necessity for
fair-skinned northerners like me. Fortunately,
ocean breezes are constant and cooling.

Kookaburras are everywhere and I simply can't help smiling when I hear their maniacal laughter in the forest. I wonder what Mom would think of it (and how it would compare with Becky's worst (best?)Australasian bee eater
Truly fascinating patterns on the beach left by sand bubbler crabs.
Mother Agile Wallaby with joey in pouch.
Possums scour the campsites after dinner and are quite habituated to humans around them. Likewise various species of roos, wallabies, brush turkeys and scrub fowl. Many more birds feed and nest among the trees in the campsite compared to the forest surrounding it. It always amazes us how often our private joke is true: the best birds are near the parking lot!

We'll be in Cape Hillsborough for 2 more nights and will then go into the outback, and probably out of communication for up to a week. Don't worry - I'm going to get this blog mastered before I leave OZ. I'll be back!
