Crow’s Nest National Park Nov. 1-3
You
can probably imagine how excited we were to find this adorable guy!
Kookaburra love-birds. In spring, most birds are paired, thus often easier to see as they watch to make sure that others of their species don’t intrude on their territory.
We were amazed to see this immature wedge-tailed eagle
perched above a termite nest in a tree. Jock began taking photos when suddenly I noticed that something was moving behind the nest. When the head came into view, I realized that
a goanna (lizard) had climbed the tree and was after something in the nest. (See
the goanna’s head with tongue flicking out, just on top of the nest, right
under the eagle). We couldn’t figure out what the eagle wanted to eat: the
goanna or whatever was in the nest (birds do lay eggs in termite nests.) We’ll
never know. The eagle flew away and the goanna helped himself to whatever meal
lay inside.
